#1 Leading cause of death in America: HEART DISEASE
Heart disease has beat cancer when it counts for the leading cause of death in men and women in the United States. One of the major heart diseases is coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is producing blockages in the vessels which nourish the heart itself. Atherosclerosis occurs when the arteries become clogged and narrowed, restricting blood flow. Without adequate blood flow from the coronary arteries, the heart becomes starved of oxygen and vital nutrients it needs to work properly.
Keys to prevention include quitting smoking, lowering cholesterol, controlling high blood pressure, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising. Cardiac Rehab services at Central Montana Medical Center are designed to help patients with heart disease recover faster and return to full and productive lives. Cardiac rehab can make the patient feel better faster, get stronger, reduce stress, reduce the risk of heart problems and importantly, live longer.
Cardiac Rehab includes weekly exercise, education and individual counseling with CMMC’s Cardiac Rehab registered nurse. This type of supervised exercise program has been shown to dramatically reduce the risk of a second heart attack. Outstanding performance was awarded to CMMC’s Cardiac Rehab coordinator, Deb Lee. Lee was involved in a regional outcomes project sponsored by the State Health Department. CMMC’s cardiac rehab program rated the highest out of 22, tracking a uniformed set of quality indicators.
Cardiac Rehab can be covered by insurance, and is a physician-referred program. It is offered each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 12 noon, and 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the Central Montana Sports Medicine Center at CMMC. This state-of-the-art facility boasts medical and exercise equipment usually found in much larger facilities. Central Montana is truly fortunate to have such a quality program available.
