Utilization Review (UR) management is a collaborative effort involving physicians, nurses, social service, a UR nurse, and other ancillary and supportive services. The UR nurse provides a clinical review of patient records to evaluate the need for and utilization of hospital services, and to provide third party payors with requested information regarding patient stay. The UR nurse facilitates appropriate physician documentation to accurately reflect the patient’s condition along with providing clinical knowledge to the patient care team. This review allows the patients to receive appropriate services along with quality of care. The patient care team along with the UR nurse also evaluates the patient’s needs for leaving the hospital which promotes a successful discharge.
